Vollucella

I saw my first Volucella pellucens on McIntyres Field on Thursday, this is a large distinctive Hoverfly with a large white band below the thorax http://homepage.ntlworld.com/ray.hamblett1/nature/flies.html#Volucella_pellucens

This one seems to have a damaged left wing and there is a small nick out the tip of the right wing

Hi. I caught one of these in a kitchen, in Hook (Hants),the other day. It's taken me ages to find out what it was because I've never seen one before and I'm not an entomologist. Anyway, it's dead now. However, I still have it in a small container - It's yours if you want it. Check out google images 'volecella pellucens' for some great pictures. I got there via the Forum for the Society of the Study of Flies (Diptera).
